The Patriots of the Sons of the Revolution in Michigan had the distinct pleasure to host a summer July 2017 BBQ recently at the Oshtemo Twsp. Park Large Pavillion on West Main St. in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Invited were the DAR, CAR and JAC (Junior American Citizens). We also had one SAR member in attendance. The purpose was to bring together the various local patriotic groups with common interests in our great Republic and to celebrate and honor our nations birth. The fare consisted of BBQ chicken legs and hot dogs with a pot luck dish supplied by our friends in the DAR. DAR Past Regent Gloria Culp provided bagpipes for the posting of the colors and games included: croquet, whiffle ball and Pin the (skunk) Tail on King Geo. III. A dramatic performance on the Louisiana Purchase was preformed by CAR and those in attendance. It is the hope that we can make this an annual event to be held on the following saturday of July 4th. Much fun was had by all and new friends were made. All who attended proclaimed it a success and voiced a williness to build upon the seed planted this year. President Hickok showed his excellence in hot dog slinging and BBQ chicken legging as he kept the plates full along with deviled eggs, jello and various other culinary tidbits. This is an event that is sure to grow in popularity and attendance.
The membership of the Michigan Society is very proud of our Jr Patriot James Thomas Gorno for being selected to be among a group to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery 15 August 2017. Junior Patriot Gorno is the Grandson of rightly proud Patriot Grandpa Gary Thomas. Gary says James won his spot of Honor through an essay he wrote and was given an ok to wear his SR Rosette seen pinned on his left lapel. We applaud our Jr Patriot and are sure this wonderful patriotic experience will be held close to his heart and mind all his life, and we thank Patriot Gary Thomas for sharing it with us.
